Virginia Tech Massacre

Sometimes it's easy to forget that we have a purpose in life. Its easy to focus on such trivial problems like my overwhelming classwork and long clinic hours. But when it hits you, it hits you hard. It's hard to understand just why horrible things happen to people even though deep down I know how temporary this life is. It's hard to fathom the atrocities against innocent individuals with the motive being simple: Pure evil. We see terrorism manifested everyday by people from those in charge of the Guanatanamo Bay prison , to those responsbile for the bombings of innocent civilians worldwide, to those that carry horrific massacres of innocent students My prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to the victims and their families of the Virginia tech massacre and to all the victims of terrorism, oppression and injustice.

May you rest in peace.

Verily inna liAllahi wa Inna ilayhi la rajeoun. (To Allah (SWT) we belong and to Him shall be our return).

German Citizen gets detained, abused, and deported at Las Vegas Airport

When Majed Shehadeh arrived at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas on December 28, he was looking forward to celebrating the joyous holidays with his family; but his dream of a happy reunion was quickly shattered when he was detained, humiliated, and deported back to Germany without seeing his family.

Shehadeh, 62, a German citizen of Syrian descent whose wife and three children are U.S Citizens was interrogated for eight hours upon his arrival and then taken to the North Las Vegas Detention Center without a chance to contact his family or seek legal counsel. Shehadeh was reportedly also prevented from taking his prescribed heart medication for over 22 hours and denied proper bathroom privileges.

Shehadeh came to the United States to visit his daughter in Bakersfield, CA and celebrate her passing the California Bar Exam and her one-year wedding anniversary. According to his wife, Shehadeh had come to the States on numerous occasions during the past thirty years without any problems.

Las Vegas Senior Special Agent of Investigation, Peter Lazaro did not return InFocus’s request for a comment.

“My father is a loving affectionate law abiding man who doesn’t have so much as a parking ticket. No one has given us any explanation as to why this has happened,” said Shehadeh’s daughter, Majida 29 in an interview with InFocus.

Majida also said that Shehadeh is being made to sleep on a cold concrete floor in a freezing cell without a blanket or sweatshirt, “They are putting his life in jeopardy by denying him his medication for hours and then placing him in horrid conditions despite his weak immune system and ailing health.” She added, “I feel disappointed that the principles of civil liberties and institutional accountability of this country have so eroded.”

Shehadeh’s wife Joanne told InFocus, “I feel like I am living in a police state with absolutely no rights and no way to get any answers. The America that I knew, the image I was raised with is shattered.” Joanne also expressed her apprehension about visiting the United States again, “ My biggest hope was to move back to my homeland, but I no longer feel safe in it. I am petrified that what happened to my husband can also happen to my sons or me in the future.”

Shehadeh’s case is the most recent of a series of cases involving mistreatment and abuse by airport officials towards Muslims. In April of 2006, Safana Jawad, a Muslim woman and Spanish citizen who came to the United States to visit her sixteen year old son in Florida was interrogated for six hours, strip searched and deported without seeing her family. Ironically, the Department of Homeland Security issued an apology to Jawad the same week that the incident with Shehadeh took place.

More recently in July, a Pakistani man was detained and interrogated at LAX airport and then deported back to his country without the chance to contact his family or seek legal counsel. His wife, a U.S citizen who arrived with him was told to leave the airport and was given no information about his whereabouts or the reason for his detention.

What’s happening at these airports is appalling and goes against our American values and constitution,” said CAIR Civil Rights Coordinator Affad Shaikh. The message these incidents send to the Muslim community is that no matter how much we try to become a part of the American fabric by cooperating and working with federal agencies, we are still considered second-class citizens.”

Website says "KILL ALL MUSLIM KIDS"

I'm speechless

FL WEB HOST ASKED TO DROP 'KILL ALL MUSLIM KIDS' SITE - TOP

(TAMPA, FL, 12/14/06) - The Tampa, Fla., office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Tampa) is calling on an Internet web hosting company in that state to drop a hate site that supports calls to "kill all Muslim kids."

Under the headline, "Love Your Kids? Fear For Their Future? Kill All Muslim Kids!!!!," the website's owner, who lives in the Tampa area, wrote: "Makes sense to me. After all, if Muslims are raising their little crumb-snatching, curtain climbing, ankle biting rug rats to strap on bombs in order to kill us, it is logically correct to assume that in order to stop that from happening we need to kill all Muslim kids. Starting now."

Other entries on the site contain obscene and hate-filled attacks on Islam and Muslims, as well as support for violent actions. One entry states: "It's bad enough some [expletive deleted] in Minnesota elect a Muslim to Congress but the people in Michigan might have done them one better. . .Start sticking [sic] up on guns and ammo. The war will start soon."

In a letter to Boca Raton-based Hostgator.com LLC, CAIR-Tampa Executive Director Ahmed Bedier wrote: "While we respect an individual's right to freedom of speech, we oppose hate-filled speech that calls for violence against innocent people. . .It's clear that [the website is] in violation of your company's 'Terms of Service' agreement which states: '...Any material that, in our judgment, is obscene or threatening is prohibited and will be removed from our servers with or without notice.' The agreement also clearly defines 'hate sites' under 'Examples of unacceptable material.'"

Bedier asked Hostgator to stop hosting the site. He noted that CAIR had raised concerns about the anti-Muslim site at a local forum on hate crimes in November.

Boycott U.S Airways

This is a second incident involving blatant hatred and bias from U.S Airways towards Muslims. See the links below. One woman was detained for 14 hours (mostly airport officials are to blame) but then U.S Airways refused to let her on the flight even after she had cleared security and had an FBI agent with her. The second is removing six imams from the flight in handcuffs for trying to pray.

United Express/SkyWest Airlines are not guiltless as well. They have removed a Muslim father and son from an airplane because their appearance made the flight attendant "uncomfortable"

We need to do some serious boycotting to show these racist airlines that they will pay a heavy financial price for this hatred. I know it may be tempting if we find a convenient flight or cheaper flight on that airline, but remember our Muslim brother and sisters and think of how you would feel if someone did this to you. All these people were ordinary law abiding citizens who paid for their fares like everyone else. They were humiliated and disrespected based on their faith and background. If we dont' unite on this cause, airlines will think they can continue to abuse us with no consequences.

Radio Hoax reveals Suppport for Nazi-like treatment towards Muslims

Straight from the CAIR newsletter. Can't begin to imagine how disturbing this is. what's funny is they don't need to BRAND Muslims. We carry our identity proudly. Simply Ask.

Still, It's finals week and I need to be studying, yet I keep getting sucked in because every headline is more shocking the other................Allah Yahmeena.

Below is the article: Reader Beaware!

WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/27/06) - A parody of anti-Muslim bigotry on a Washington, D.C., radio station drew support for treating American Muslims in a manner similar to how the Jewish community was targeted in Nazi Germany.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said today that the reaction to the parody is a "wake-up call" for religious and political leaders who remain silent on the issue of growing Islamophobia in America.

In his 630 WMAL program on Sunday, November 26, talk show host Jerry Klein seemed to advocate a government program to force all Muslims to wear "identifying markers." He stated: "I'm thinking either it should be an arm band, a crescent moon arm band, or it should be a crescent moon tattoo." (4:00) Klein said: "If it means that we have to round them up and do a tattoo in a place where everybody knows where to find it, then that's what we'll have to do." (11:38)

[The program focused on public reaction to the removal of six Imams, or Islamic religious leaders, from a US Airways flight in Minnesota last week.]

Some callers to the program rejected discriminatory treatment of Muslims, but others supported Klein's statements and even suggested that even more severe measures be taken against American Muslims. "Richard" in Gaithersburg, Md., said: "Not only do you tattoo them in the middle of their foreheads; you round them up and then ship them out of this country, period." (15:58)

"Heath" in Upper Marlboro, Md., said: "I don't think you go far enough. . .you have to set up encampments like they did during World War II like with the Japanese and Germans." (23:50)

Later in the program, Klein revealed that his call for discriminatory actions against Muslims was "baloney." Klein said: "I can't believe any of you, any of you, are sick enough to have agreed for one second with anything that I have said in the last half hour." (25:15)

[IMPORTANT NOTE: Listen to the entire program. Jerry Klein was NOT advocating discriminatory measures against American Muslims. He was actually ridiculing and exposing anti-Muslim bigotry.]

"The public reaction to Mr. Klein's courageous parody should be a wake-up call for American religious and political leaders who remain silent in the face of growing anti-Muslim bigotry in our society," said CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. "Americans of all faiths must come together to marginalize extremists and to challenge ethnic and religious bigotry."

UCLA Police Brutality

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3GstYOIc0I
http://dailybruin.com/news/articles.asp?id=38960

UCLA Police used a taser multiple times to shock a UCLA student for failing to produce his ID the library. I'm sure this has been spread like wild fire by now, but still, I can't help but write about it. I've been out of the loop lately, though the news never ceases to disturb me.

Here is the short version and a link to the full article in the daily bruin and the disturbing video.

The video says it all, but I warn prospective watchers that its quite disturbing. So this student is at the library minding his own business and studying for his exams, when CSO approach him and ask him for his ID, which is a supposed "routine" check. Like many students, he doesn't have his ID on him and refuses to leave. CSO call UCPD to remove him. As the student is leaving the library, this one officer approaches him and grabs his arm. The student reacts by saying "Don't touch me", in which case the officer's response is to electrify him with a taser. Then the horror of the video continues with the officers yelling at him STAND UP, and the poor student immoblized can't stand up because of his pain. they keep yelling at him with utmost cruelty STAND UP or get tasered again, and then they taser him AGAIN. The student screams in utmost pain. Throughout the video he is telling the officers that he has a medical condition. He is shouting "I'm not fighting you, I'm leaving". but the officers are on this high from their abuse of power and keep yelling at the student and tasering him. He got tasered 4 TIMES. That's enough to kill some people. According to eyewitnesses, he got tasered while he was in handcuffs. It was just outrageous and what's worse is the letter UCLA sent out the day after completely mistruing facts and lying. luckily the whole thing was caught on tape but still. The fact that these officers still have their badges now is disturbing. Many students at the library were screaming at the officers and telling them to stop. When one girl asked for an officer's badge number, he threatened her with a taser too. It's horrifying, but this is the America we have right now. Let's not put ourselves on a pedestal and tell 3rd world dictators that we have respect, civil liberties and human rights. We've got none of that. We're as primative as anyone can get thanks to our current administration that wants to burn our constitution. just sick...
